Why Government Affairs Is Essential to Expanding Latino Homeownership in South Florida

Latino homeownership is not just a dream—it’s a driver of economic stability, generational wealth, and community resilience. But while Latinos are leading the nation in workforce participation and entrepreneurship, public policies often lag behind in reflecting our community’s growing influence.

That’s why Government Affairs is not an afterthought—it’s a cornerstone of NAHREP South Florida’s strategy to expand sustainable homeownership.

The Numbers Speak: Where We Stand

According to the 2024 State of Hispanic Wealth Report, Hispanic homeownership continues to rise, with Latinos accounting for more than 80% of net new homeowners over the past decade. Yet significant barriers remain:

  • Housing Affordability: Limited inventory and rising costs make it harder for first-time buyers to enter the market.
  • Access to Credit: Outdated credit scoring models disproportionately impact Latino families.
  • Zoning Policies: Restrictive development rules reduce the creation of affordable housing.
  • Immigration Reform: Legal uncertainty undermines the development of a stable workforce.

While Latinos represent one of the most economically dynamic demographics in the U.S., policy gaps continue to widen the wealth divide. Click on the image below to get your copy of the 2024 State of Hispanic Homeownership Report.

The Role of Government Affairs in Homeownership

At NAHREP, the Government Affairs Director (GAD) is more than a policy liaison—they are a local advocate. They build relationships with elected officials, lead civic engagement efforts, and help our chapter show up where decisions are being made: city councils, housing commissions, and legislative sessions.

Their mission is to ensure that the Latino experience is part of the policy conversation.

A strong Government Affairs program helps NAHREP:

  • Educate policymakers on Latino housing needs
  • Advocate for zoning reform and first-time homebuyer support
  • Champion fair lending and access to credit
  • Empower the community to vote and engage in local decision-making

Why This Matters Now More Than Ever

Public policy shapes everything from mortgage access to infrastructure development. Yet Latino voter turnout and civic participation remain below potential. The 2024 report reveals that fewer than 50% of eligible Latino voters consistently participate in local elections—despite local government having the greatest impact on housing.

By increasing our visibility and voice in these conversations, we can make sure the rules don’t continue to exclude us.

How the Community Can Get Involved

NAHREP South Florida invites professionals, families, students, and allies to step into civic leadership. Here’s how:

  • Attend a policy event hosted by our Government Affairs team
  • Volunteer on our advocacy committee and help shape our local outreach
  • Register to vote and participate in every election
  • Educate your network about issues affecting Latino homeownership
  • Share your story with decision-makers to humanize housing policy

Jenny Torres, proudly recognized as the 2024 Government Affairs Director of the Year for NAHREP, stands as a national leader in advocacy—representing NAHREP South Florida, the top-ranked chapter out of more than 100 across the country. She is joined by 2024 Chapter President Nily Padron.

Final Thought: Policy Is Personal

When you think of “government affairs,” you might picture politics. But at NAHREP South Florida, we see something more human: the interest rate on your mortgage, the availability of housing in your zip code, the schools your children attend, and the opportunities you leave behind for your family.

Policy isn’t abstract. It’s personal. And it’s time we treat it that way.

Let’s ensure that Latino families in South Florida not only live in their communities—but lead them.
